This is such a great piece - thanks for your insights. It takes the brave few like you to go and experience it first hand and report back the truth. Bravo! And the narrative of your piece made me wish you'd stayed a bit longer so I would have had more to read...

Hey Jeff, you look new. Did you get that handle from OSA, or are you actually using your real name? There's no prejudice in getting angry when someone is belittiling you, nor is there any shame in coming out of a DANGEROUS CULT with information regarding how they operate. If Prof's visit was rigged, it was done so in the way that the agent that gave him the test threw it into a file and hit a button that gave a bunch of random bull that fit well enough into what he was feeding them but made it so a more gullible person would have been scared enough to possibly take the bait.

Scientology is a dangerous cult. If you join the Church of Scientology, chances are high that a friend or family member will already have outspoken disagreements with how the Co$ runs, and you'll be forced to attempt to "handle" them. After this fails (which it will), you will be forced to "disconnect" from them. Should this happen, they will be labeled as a "Supressive Person" and be sent what they call a goldenrod. Not only will they be seen as enemies of every Scientologist everywhere that follows Church Doctrine, they will also be subject to fair game.

For those of you that don't know what fair game is, chances are high that you're currently jumping into trying to understand what's going on in the inner workings of the Co$, and I applaud your efforts in trying to understand the confusing world of Scientology. As to what you should do, I suggest you do your own research like everyone else that is currently criticizing the Co$. The number one weapon that anyone has in fighting the Church of $cientology is their ability to make their own decision, and to get informed about the way the Co$ is treating their paychecks, er, parishoners, their slaves, er, children, their SPs, er, critics, and the wogs, er, you Joe and Jane Publics out there.

I had a very similar experience at the scientology center in Tustin Ca. back in the 80's. It was not long after I had read the interview with L. Ron Hubbard's son in Penthouse magazine. I was invited into the center by a cute girl in her 20's, I think they were experimenting with the "flirty fishing" used by several other cults at the time. After that my encounter was almost exactly the same as yours. After I had argued several point of their flawed belief system for a hour or more I was asked to leave before they had me removed by the police.

I certainly hope you mentioned the fact that you are a PhD in behavioural science to them, just to ruffle their feathers a bit :)
I constantly stare back at 'em now, fighting fire with fire at this point. If it worked once before, perhaps it can work again. "You're in a cult" repeated over and over (anti-auditing, as it were) may start placing doubt. Which could end up bad for them should they confess, but reality testing isn't even a phrase they're aware of anymore.
Props on your steadfastness on demanding actual hard data, after all, it's a "science", yet has no scientifically valid data to back it up? I have yet to really show my true strength, as I am among them, studying behaviours and all.
It's just frustrating and fascinating at the same time how well trained humans become, whether it's Scn or advertising.

Anreas,

Thanks for your reassurance. I'm generally an even-keeled person and certainly didn't plan to "blow up," but the situation was just so unreal that I couldn't help it!

Jeff,

I wasn't looking to find out what Scientology was...I already knew that. What I was looking to find out was what their tactics were for luring people in. And that, I did find out. The mind games they play are designed to take down your defenses and can be very persuasive. Like I said, the danger here is that someone with real problems could easily be swayed by their rhetoric and "tricks."

Anon Prof, bottom line is that your visit was rigged. You neither did find out what Scientology is nor did you want to in the first place. All you did is you successfully fueled up your prejudice. The best part of your report is that they threw you out but what a pity that you managed to waste their time so long!

Thx for sharing. Without any knowledge of you as a person I think the fact that you got so angry is a results not of Scientology's incompetence - but instead their professional mind-games designed to belittle the recruit. There are only two possible reactions: accept og anger. Thankfully you got angry, and maybe you even saved an innocent - could have been a would have been.
